Roots Are in… Ombre Hair

You’ve seen some of your favorite celebrities rocking this hair. Drew Barrymoore, Rachel Bilson, Jessica Biel, Ashlee Simpson, just to name a few. Roots are actually in style! Ombre hair can be done very subtle and look natural, but it can also be done in a way where it looks as if the ends of your hair were painted a lighter color. This rooty style is a saving grace to women who can’t afford to touch up their highlights. What most people don’t realize is that for a stylist to color your hair to look “natural”, just like this ombre hair look, it often takes a few steps to achieve the look. So if you want your stylist to create this hair, expect it may cost a little more than your typical highlight. Good news is when your roots grow in, it’s not big deal, it’s actually part of the style! Ombre hair definitely isn’t for everyone and every hair type, so be sure to touch base with your colorist to get their opinion if it’s good for you. Also, be sure they know how to do it! This is a modern style and unless they are a skilled colorist, you may leave the salon with anything but ombre hair, so bring pictures for reference.

Drew’s hair is amazing in this picture! Her hair is definitely dramatic ombre, where the roots are very dark brown and the ends are completely bleach blonde.

Always love Rachel’s style. Her hair is a more subtle version of this look, and she actually has some carmel highlights connecting the dark roots to the light ends, which looks gorgeous!

This is a fun look for Ashlee. Let’s be honest though, this girl can rock any hair color and she looks amazing. Her own hair is actually dyed black, and all the light hair you see are extensions! Looks can be deceiving!

I have very short hair and have gone light blonde. My stylist is trying to stay away from bleaching my hair, because I’m going to be getting a perm and the bleach would dry out my hair. She is using a hair color instead. The problem is that the back of my hair is a lot darker than the top and sides. She just told me that she is going to just bleach the back, where it’s the darkest, and it doesn’t get permed anyway. That should blend in better with the rest of my hair. What do you think?

I think it’s a great idea to stay away from the bleach if possible, since you are doing other chemical processes to your hair. Maybe she can highlight through the back instead of bleaching the whole thing, but if she thinks it will be safe and come out looking nice to bleach the back, I would trust her opinion. Be sure you know all your options though! Best of luck!

[…] Whitney’s hair has a more natural rooty look, however she has very subtle golden blonde highlights through the top, some bright bits around her face, and then the ends of her hair have been tipped out and are really bright. I love this take on ombre color! This is a great look for this upcoming spring, and can still be quite low maintenance too. To read more about ombre hair color, check out my blog post here. […]

I got a perm around a month ago. Is it safe to get an ombre? I haven’t dyed my hair in a year and a half so it’s fairly healthy. And I’ve heard both opinions on whether it’d be safe or not.

Hi Maddie. As long as your hair is in good condition and your colorist is experienced with ombre hair coloring, you may be able to get it done. If your hair is dried out from the perm, it may need to be a bit conditioned first before any sort of highlighting. Good luck!

I’d like to get an ombre, but i don’t know it i’d look good since the shade of my hair is quite dark. If I get one, i’d like something that’s not so drastic.I’m also concerned, since i’ve never dyed my hair. Will it damage it? should i get a semi- perm?

      Hi Alex

Ombre coloring on hair that has never been colored before is really easy and can be done in a gentle way to ensure the least amount of damage. My advice to you is to find photos of the type of ombre coloring you like and bring them to your hair stylist to se if they can do the look. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I actually went to my hair stylist and got my hair ombre , She dyed the end of my locks and I love it ! My hair stylist only beached it and its turning yellow. She said to apply a toner with blue pigments? Or a blue shampoo? My hair is naturally dark brown and I want to get the right products. What do you recommend?

If you are trying to counteract the yellow in the bleached parts, a purple shampoo & conditioner works great! Matrix sells So Silver which I like and you should be able to purchase at any beauty supply store. This purple shampoo won’t affect your brown hair. I’d recommend using your purple products once a week, but if the yellow is still prominent you can use it more frequently. Glad you’re loving your new ombre! 🙂

Hi i would like to ombre my hair I haven’t colored my hair in about 2years and i use to dye it black. I was wondering if ombre is safer than any other hair coloring process since it is only the ends of the hair… Thank You.

Ombre isn’t exactly safer on your hair since it’s only dying the midshaft-ends. If you think about it, that’s the most fragile part of the hair, so if your hair isn’t strong or healthy, it could actually be more damaging than regular highlights. I’d suggest finding some ombre hair photos that you like, and bringing them to a hair colorist to get their opinions on if this would be a good idea for your hair. Good luck!

Hi. I need to touch up my dark roots (grey). I have ombre now. When I rinse out the dye, will it darkened my light ends? Thank you.

Hi Priscilla! It shouldn’t do anything to your ends unless your hair is extremely dry on the ends. Always best to have a professional colorist take care of this stuff though just in case there could be some color grabbing.
